Regular Pool Maintenance

A sparkling backyard pool doesn’t happen by accident—it’s the result of a simple, steady routine. Regular pool maintenance protects your family’s health, extends equipment life, reduces chemical costs, and keeps the water inviting every day. Here’s Pool Life’s clear, practical guide to what “regular” actually means and how to make it effortless.

Why regular maintenance matters

  • Health & safety: Proper sanitiser and balance stop bacteria, viruses, and algae from taking hold.
  • Lower costs: Clean filters and balanced water mean fewer chemicals, fewer repairs, and lower power bills.
  • Longer equipment life: Pumps, heaters, chlorinators, and robot cleaners last longer when the system operates efficiently and remains clean.
  • Better experience: Clear, soft-feeling water and a debris-free surface make swimming a delightful experience.

The five pillars of a healthy pool

  1. Circulation – Water must move. Good flow lets chemicals mix and helps the filter catch fine debris.
  2. Filtration – A clean, correctly sized filter removes particles that cloud the water and feed algae.
  3. Sanitisation – Chlorine (or salt chlorination, bromine, etc.) kills microorganisms and oxidises contaminants.
  4. Water Balance – pH, alkalinity, calcium, and stabiliser (CYA) are kept in range to protect surfaces and ensure sanitiser works properly.
  5. Cleaning – Brushing, skimming, and vacuuming, removing debris that filters and chemistry alone cannot clean.

The Pool Life routine

Daily (in warm weather) / Every 2–3 days (cooler months)

  • Quick skim: Scoop leaves and insects before they sink to the bottom.
  • Check water level: Keep it 2/3 up the skimmer mouth.
  • Spot-test sanitiser & pH: Especially after heavy use or hot, sunny days.

Weekly

  • Brush thoroughly: Walls, steps, waterline, behind ladders. Brushing disrupts biofilm, allowing chlorine to work more effectively.
  • Vacuum or run the cleaner: Use a slow manual vacuum or a full robot cycle.
  • Empty baskets: Skimmer and pump baskets clear = stronger flow.
  • Comprehensive test: pH, total alkalinity, calcium hardness, stabiliser (CYA), and sanitiser level (plus salt if you have a chlorinator).
  • Adjust chemistry in order: Alkalinity → pH → calcium → stabiliser → sanitiser. Administer small doses, circulate, and then retest.
  • Filter check: If pressure has risen 8–10 psi from clean pressure, backwash (sand/DE) or hose cartridges.

Monthly

  • Waterline clean: Remove scum/scale before it hardens.
  • Equipment inspection: O-rings, unions, leaks, timer schedules, and chlorinator cell condition.
  • Deep rinse: Cartridge elements (if pressure indicates); sand filter degrease/clean as needed.

Seasonally

  • Pre-summer tune-up: Inspect/replace filter media or cartridges, verify heater performance, and confirm chlorinator output.
  • Pre-winter strategy: Reduce runtime and maintain chemistry balance.
  • Following major events: Such as storms, heatwaves, or pool parties, call for extra testing and a shock dose if needed.

Target ranges (quick reference)

  • pH: 7.2–7.6
  • Free Chlorine: 1–3 ppm (2–4 ppm typical in salt pools)
  • Total Alkalinity: 80–120 ppm (fibreglass often 60–100 ppm)
  • Calcium Hardness: 200–400 ppm (fibreglass 175–250 ppm)
  • Stabiliser (CYA): Per manufacturer (commonly between 20–70 ppm), salt pools per manufacturer (often 60–80 ppm).
  • Salt (SWG): Per manufacturer (commonly 3,000–4,500 ppm)

Ranges vary by surface and system. Pool Life can tailor a target sheet for your exact setup.

Troubleshooting quick wins

Cloudy water

  • Verify filter cleanliness and run time first.
  • Brush, then ensure the pH is ~7.4 and the sanitiser is within range.
  • Run the pump for a longer period on low speed.
  • Use a clarifier if needed; persistent issues may require a floc and vacuum-to-waste process.

Green tinge/algae

  • Lower pH to ~7.2, then shock to a high free-chlorine level matched to your CYA.
  • Brush daily; run the pump 24/7 until the water is clear. Clean/backwash filter as pressure rises.
  • Recheck stabiliser—too high CYA can slow chlorine’s effectiveness.

Scale or rough surfaces

  • pH and calcium levels are likely elevated. Balance the water, use a scale inhibitor, and clean tiles/waterline.
  • For salt cells, soak/clean as directed (avoid over-acid washing).

Irritated eyes/“chlorine smell”

  • Usually, chloramines, not “too much chlorine.”
  • Shock the pool, improve circulation, and keep pH in range.

Energy & cost savers

  • Run longer on low speed: Variable-speed pumps conserve power and filter more effectively.
  • Keep baskets and filters clean: The pump works less to move more water.
  • Use a cover: Cuts evaporation and heat loss.
  • Right-size chemicals: Dose small, retest often—overshooting wastes money and time.
  • Landscape smart: Low-litter plants near the pool mean fewer leaves (and fewer phosphates).

What Pool Life does on a service visit

  • Full water test & balance: On-the-spot adjustments.
  • System check: Pump, filter, chlorinator, heater, valves, and timers.
  • Clean & clear: Skim, brush, vacuum (or robot cycle), baskets emptied, and filter backwashed/rinsed as required.
  • Preventive care: O-ring lube, leak checks, early-fault detection, cell inspection/descale.
  • Advice tailored to you: Run-time settings, seasonal adjustments, and simple habits that help you save money.

Service options: Weekly, fortnightly, or monthly plans; seasonal start-up/winter care; green-to-clean recoveries; equipment upgrades and installs.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Adding chemicals in big dumps: You’ll overshoot. Add in stages and circulate between tests.
  • Chasing pH while TA is off: Set alkalinity first to maintain a stable pH.
  • Ignoring stabiliser (CYA): Too low = chlorine burns off; too high = chlorine works slowly.
  • Short run times in summer: Heat and UV increase chlorine demand—extend filtration.
  • Neglecting brushing: It’s the most cost-effective and effective way to prevent algae growth.
